Slow speed over VPN

What to do when everything is slow over the VPN: pick a location with lower latency, compare speed without the VPN, reconnect, switch networks.

Speed over the VPN depends on the location you pick, how busy the network is and the speed of the internet on your device itself. If things have slowed down, try the following in order.

What to check#

  1. Pick a location with lower latency. Locations closer to you are usually faster. How to compare them — see below.

  2. Compare the speed without the VPN. Turn the VPN off and run a speed test. If it's slow without the VPN too, the issue is the internet connection itself.

  3. Reconnect. Turn the VPN off and on, refresh the subscription in your app, restart the app.

  4. Pause background downloads. Big downloads and updates on this or other devices on the same network eat up speed.

  5. Try a different network — another Wi-Fi, for example.

How to compare locations#

The "Ping" section (on a phone it's under "More"). The test starts on its own; "Run again" repeats it. "Recommended" suggests a location — select it in your VPN app. The test runs from your browser, so turn the VPN off while it runs.

In the ResetVPN app you can send around the VPN whatever doesn't need it: the "By rules" switch on the "Connection" tab and "Settings" → "Routing rules".

Still slow#

Message support — the "Support" section on the website, in the Mini App and in the ResetVPN app, or the support bot @ResetVPNsupport_bot. Send us:

  • the location and the time it was slow;

  • speed test results with and without the VPN;

  • your device and the app you connect with.
