How to test ping and pick a location

The Ping section on the website and in the Mini App: how to run the test, what the numbers mean and how to pick the fastest location.

The Ping section measures how fast each ResetVPN server responds from your own network. Use it to pick a location: the lower the latency, the more responsive the connection. You don't need a subscription to run the test.

How to run the test#

  1. Open "Ping". On the website it's in the left-hand menu; on a phone, tap "More" → "Ping". In the Mini App, tap "More" → "Ping" (in a wide window it's in the left-hand menu).

  2. Wait for the test to finish. It starts on its own; the button shows how many servers have been checked, for example "Testing · 5/12".

  3. Look at the "Recommended" card. It shows the location with the lowest latency; in the list it's marked "For you".

  4. Select that location in the app you use to connect to VPN, then reconnect.

  5. Run the test again if needed with the "Run again" button.

Important. The test runs from your browser. If VPN is on at the time, the requests go through it and the numbers come out higher. If the website or the Mini App opens without VPN too, testing without it is more accurate. If it doesn't open without VPN, test with VPN on — just keep in mind the numbers will be higher.

What the numbers mean#

Column

Meaning

"Latency", "RTT"

How long the server takes to reply: a bar and a number in milliseconds. Lower is better

"Jitter"

How much the replies differ from each other. High jitter means an unstable connection

"Loss"

Share of requests that got no reply. A check mark means no loss

A cross instead of a number means the server didn't reply. Above the list are the totals: "Best ping", "Average", "Packet loss" and how many servers are in the list.

You can search the list by city or country and sort it "by ping" or "by name".

Your browser sends 5 short HTTPS requests to each server and takes the fastest reply, so the numbers may differ from a regular ping command.

A similar test that needs no sign-in is available at resetvpn.com/ping (opens in a new tab).

If something's wrong#

"Server list unavailable. Try again later."

The server list didn't load. Check your internet connection and refresh the page; in the Mini App, close it and open it again.

No server replied

Most likely the internet is down or the network doesn't let the requests through. Check your connection, try another network (for example, a different Wi-Fi) and run the test again.

Ping is low but VPN is still slow

Ping only shows response time; speed also depends on your network and app. See Slow speed over VPN for what else to check.
