ResetVPN on Linux: installing and common problems
How to install ResetVPN from a .deb or .rpm package, why the resetvpn group and signing in again matter, and what to do if the VPN won't connect.
On this page
The ResetVPN app for Linux comes as .deb and .rpm packages for 64-bit x86-64 computers (Intel and AMD). There are no ARM packages at the moment.
How to install#
Download the package from resetvpn.com/download (opens in a new tab): resetvpn_amd64.deb for Ubuntu, Debian and Mint, resetvpn_x86_64.rpm for Fedora and openSUSE.
Install it with your package manager — it then pulls in the libraries it needs (GTK 3, libsecret, libayatana-appindicator3):
# Ubuntu, Debian, Mint sudo apt install ./resetvpn_amd64.deb # Fedora sudo dnf install ./resetvpn_x86_64.rpmLog out and log back in. The package adds you to the resetvpn group: only its members can connect, and a new group membership takes effect after you sign in again or reboot.
Start ResetVPN from the app menu or with the
resetvpncommand, sign in and connect.
Other users of this computer get access with sudo usermod -aG resetvpn <name> — and they also need to sign in again.
If something goes wrong#
"VPN access needed"
Your account isn't in the resetvpn group. Run sudo usermod -aG resetvpn $USER, then log out and back in.
"The VPN engine lacks permission to create the network adapter"
Reinstall the .deb or .rpm package — it grants that permission itself.
"Website names (DNS) resolve outside the VPN"
If the app says systemd-resolved refused the settings, reinstall the package — it installs the rule that allows it. If /etc/resolv.conf doesn't use systemd-resolved, point resolv.conf at systemd-resolved.
"The system refused to run the VPN engine"
This usually means a drive mounted noexec, SELinux or AppArmor. The details are in "Settings" → "Technical log".
It won't connect in TUN mode
On the "Connection" tab switch "TUN" to "System proxy" and confirm with "Enable". In this mode, point your browser or app at the proxy 127.0.0.1:10808 yourself (SOCKS5 or HTTP; that's the default port).
"Sign-in won't be saved"
Your keyring is locked — unlock it and restart the app, otherwise you'll have to sign in again after every restart.
No tray icon, and closing the window stopped the VPN
In GNOME the tray icon shows only with the AppIndicator extension. To keep the VPN running with the window closed, turn on "Settings" → "Behavior" → "Minimize to tray instead of closing"; bring the window back with "Show ResetVPN" in the icon's menu. "Launch when you sign in" is there too.
Still not working — open "Support" in the app and tap "Attach diagnostics". If you can't sign in to the app, write from the website account.resetvpn.com (opens in a new tab) or on Telegram at t.me/ResetVPNsupport_bot (opens in a new tab). Mention your distribution and its version.
