ResetVPN on Windows won't start or connect
What to check if the ResetVPN app on Windows won't install, start or connect: admin rights, other VPNs, proxy mode, antivirus.
On this page
The ResetVPN app runs on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. The installer, ResetVPN-Setup.exe, is on resetvpn.com/download (opens in a new tab). If Windows shows a warning when you first run the installer, click "More info" → "Run anyway". If your antivirus (Microsoft Defender included) deleted the installer or won't let it run, contact support.
The app needs administrator rights — without them the VPN adapter can't start. So when it launches, Windows may ask whether to allow the app to make changes — click "Yes".
What to check#
Administrator rights. If the main screen says "Run as administrator" or "VPN network adapter didn't start", quit the app (tray icon → "Quit") and start it again: right-click the ResetVPN shortcut → "Run as administrator".
Other VPNs and proxies. "Other VPNs or traffic modifiers detected" or "A port the VPN needs is taken by another program" — close those programs completely, including from the tray. "Windows system proxy is on" — click "Turn off proxy".
Connection mode. On the "Connection" tab switch "TUN" to "System proxy", confirm with "Enable" and connect again. If the app says "Windows won't release the VPN adapter" (code 0x1F), reboot the computer; to get online right away, click "Switch to Proxy mode".
Antivirus and firewall. Connect the VPN and run "Settings" → "Connection check". If it finds a traffic interceptor, add three files from the install folder (usually C:\Program Files\ResetVPN) to your antivirus exclusions: resetvpn_app.exe, ResetVpnHelperService.exe and cores\xray.exe. The "Copy paths for exclusions" button copies them.
"Internet blocked". The VPN dropped and the "Kill switch" is keeping traffic from going around it. Reconnect or click "Unblock the internet".
Reinstall. "The VPN engine is missing" or "Kill switch is not working" (the ResetVPN Helper service isn't available) — download the installer again and install over the current version.
"Data folder unavailable". Restart the app. If that doesn't help, open the "Technical log" (the link is on the same screen) and send it to support.
Still not working#
In the app, open the "Support" tab and click "Attach diagnostics" — a connection report is added to your message. Or click "Send to support" in "Connection check". If the app won't open, write from the website account.resetvpn.com (opens in a new tab) ("Support") or on Telegram at t.me/ResetVPNsupport_bot (opens in a new tab).
Mention your Windows version, the error text and what you've already tried.
